In Tuesday, March 3rd's Environmental Quality and Public Works Committee meeting, Council will hear from Charles Martin, Director of the Division of Water Quality, and Rick Bowman, the city's Odor Control Manager, about odor mitigation processes for 2026.
In 2023, there was a rise in complaints about sewer odor in areas near the Town Branch (Leestown Road/New Circle area) and West Hickman (Veterans Park area) pump stations. In 2024, improvements were made to odor control equipment at these plants and evaluation systems were created to track how well new chemicals and equipment were helping ease the odor issues, including adding the Odor Control Manager position.
In 2025, the city invested over $2 million into treatment infrastructure to reduce odors emitted at Town Branch and West Hickman pump stations. Two additional treatment plants are almost ready for construction.
Looking toward 2026, the city is piloting new chemicals being added to the city's collection system and is bidding out chemical sourcing right now.
