What Kentucky’s nonprofit food markets learn from their communities and each other
In Kentucky’s dense cities and smallest towns, nonprofits are bridging the gap between those who grow food, those who have excess and those who need it.
Higgins-Hord will serve now through January 2027.
On Friday, August 22nd, Mayor Linda Gorton appointed Lisa Higgins-Hord to fill the 6th District Councilmember vacancy. Higgins-Hord – who was appointed to fill a vacancy for the same seat in 2020 – will serve the remainder of former Councilmember Denise Gray's term through January 2027.
Higgins-Hord is the Assistant Vice President of Community Health at the University of Kentucky. She has served on a number of boards and commissions throughout Lexington, including the 250Lex Commission and the Gatton Park on the Town Branch Committee.
The vacancy was left by former Councilmember Denise Gray after she resigned in July to move to Milwaukee. Gray was elected to serve two terms on Council starting in 2022.
Gray had endorsed Christian Wellmann to be appointed as her replacement by Mayor Gorton. Gorton said Friday that 15 people applied to serve in the 6th District seat, but she chose Higgins-Hord for her long service to Lexington, as well as her familiarity with Council given her short term in 2020.
Higgins-Hord told reporters on Friday that she had not yet decided if she would run for election for the District Council seat in 2026. The filing deadline for candidates for local office is January 4th, 2026. No one has filed to run for election in that seat yet.
Higgins-Hord will begin attending meetings starting August 26th.
