Environmental Quality and Public Works Commissioner Nancy Albright said that the city was prepared for a normal snow event, not an ice storm.
The Blue Sky Activity Center is an industrial area off Athens-Boonesboro near I-75. It was brought into the Urban Service Area in 2024, and is being planned for redevelopment.
In the February 10th General Government and Planning Committee, the Division of Planning will present an update on the Blue Sky Small Area Plan. The plan focuses on the Blue Sky Activity Center, an industrial area off Athens-Boonesboro Road near I-75 that developed primarily in the 1970s and 1980s.
The area is home to approximately 150 businesses supporting over 1,000 jobs, with more than 60% paying at least $20 per hour in industries like manufacturing, construction, and warehousing. The plan is designed to create a long-term direction for the area after it was added to the Urban Service Area in 2024.

The planning team has conducted extensive public engagement, including door-to-door outreach, a BBQ luncheon, focus groups with businesses and property owners, and online surveys. Feedback identified top priorities including food and retail options, parks and trails, improved utilities and connectivity, and better lighting and security.
Next steps include developing a coordinated land use and transportation framework to improve access and connectivity, particularly at the I-75 interchange, modernizing zoning in the area to support industrial needs, and building infrastructure capacity to promote sustainable development and long-term employment in the area.
